500 Watt Motor

There is a lot to understand in this brief description.

500 watt. This is an indicator of how powerful the motor will be. The European standard for electric bikes is a maximum of a 250 watt motor (200 watts in England). Warning! This is not enough power to efficiently get you up hills or power through heavy headwinds. We tested many different motors with different wattages till we found the perfect motor, one that was able to drive our 200 pound founder up a fairly steep hill where he lives! Anything less would not do.

Brushless. Our specially designed motors have no internal brushes. We use the direct drive technology using magnets instead. This means that there is nothing to wear out and when you ride the bike without the use of the motor, you do not have to overcome any additional resistance from the motor. It is completely freewheeling.

Gearless. Again, no moving parts inside the motor to wear out and break. Most geared motors use three plastic gears inside that turn the wheel. Over time, those gears will wear down and get damaged. A gearless motor is also quieter and has no vibration.

Rear hub. This may not sound like much, but let's think about this. Why would you put the motor in the front wheel creating a situation where all of the torque generated from the motor is driving the wheel that does not have the weight of the rider on it? If you hit a wet spot or some loose sand or dirt, you could easily lose traction on the tire. It is much safer to put the motor on the rear wheel where most of the weight is. No chance of the wheel spinning out on you.

36 Volt Battery Pack

Make sure you do not settle for a 24 volt battery. Not enough power (unless it is driving an underpowered 250 watt motor!). And there are different types of batteries being used in electric bikes today. The oldest technology is the SLA or sealed lead acid battery. Very heavy (triple the weight of the lithium), will not get you very far and will only be able to take around 150 Ð 200 recharges before it is dead. The next best is nickel metal hydride batteries that are a little lighter than SLA but have issues with Òbubble memoryÓ which shortens the life. The best battery for use in electric bikes is lithium ion (think Energizer bunny) which is the lightest, propel the bike the farthest and will last over 10,000 miles of life!

Most electric bikes all look the same. Ugly! We designed our bike to not look like electric bikes. We wanted them to be cool looking and very comfortable. Notice how we moved the pedals forward just a little to give the rider an upright seated position? No hunching over for us (my neck is hurting just thinking about it).

Numerous Color Choices

Why do electric bike companies use the Henry Ford model for color choices. You can have any color you want as long as it is black or silver. Our customers want to be different! Rear Battery Pack

Just wanted to point out this little but important fact. Most electric bikes have the battery pack mounted to a rack that is bolted to the bike. Wrong! Over time, the nuts and bolts will come loose and there will be a lot of rattles and noises coming from the rack. Sometimes, the racks even break. We know how to solve that problem; weld the rack right to the frame to eliminate rattles and make it strong!

Front Disk Brakes

Why? Because people who ride electric bikes will tend to go faster than they would on a regular bike. That extra speed needs the right braking power. 'V' brakes or caliper brakes don't cut it for us. And we use Avid BB 7 disk brakes; some of the best in the industry!

Designed in the USA

The Pedego Comfort Cruisers were designed right here in Irvine, CA. We import the bikes from Asia about 90% built. We add a few specific components, instrumental to our success here in the US and test every bike before it is shipped out to the customer. We even repackage the bike in specially designed cardboard containers to make sure that the bike gets delivered in great condition. Our customers are typically riding their Pedego electric bikes within 10 minutes of getting them delivered.
