Electric Bike Kit – The Lesser E-Bike
Electric Bike Kit – The Lesser E-Bike
If you have ever considered buying electric bikes, or perhaps even an electric bike kit to convert your existing bike, you might want to make sure you read this article first. An e-bike, while not necessarily a complicated piece of machinery, is definitely engineered in a precise manner, to work precisely. If you are looking to buy a kit and convert your bike, there are at least three big factors that I would consider and compare against buying an existing electric bike.
To begin with, there is a fair amount of work involved. Now unless you are between the right age and with the right skill set, this is probably work that is either foreign to you or more experimental. With either kids or the elderly being unsuited for this conversion process (not because they aren't capable, but because they probably don't want to), you should realize this is a worry completely absent when buying a new e-bike. Electric bikes are typically something that you can ride right away, and start enjoying, not have it be a project that you commit time to, and aren't aware of how it will actually turn out.
There is also the fact that if you are buying an electric bike kit to try and save money, but putting it on a low to medium quality bike, you might not really be getting the full use out of it. Converting something old with something new won't make the whole package new. Maybe your seat isn't that comfortable, your frame doesn't really work for you, your brakes are a little shot – all factors that would greatly change the end product of your e-bike, regardless of how good of a conversion process you did. Let alone the age or quality of the bike, there is a certain amount of wear and tear that will hinder you. If you have a bike with rust, or excessive dirt, you will have to spend a lot of time and energy to fully clean the bike before you could very successfully convert it into a proud member of the e-bike family.
Finally, you should also consider the unseen risk factors, or specifically, the risk to your bike and or to yourself. Unless you work with your hands a lot, or do something else regularly that would prepare you for the conversion process, there is easily a chance that you could scuff yourself up. While some bike grease from the chain is easily remedied, there are plenty of sharp edges and metal that could do damage to you that won't be as easy to correct as a wash of the hands. Perhaps you like the thrill of the work, but most people probably want something they both know works, and know they didn't hurt themselves accomplishing. Let's not forget the bike itself. Doing something incorrectly could easily spell disaster for your bike. You could damage a rim, break a chain, break your gears, or even worse and they are all things that could be completely avoided if you bought your electric bike as a finished product.
