Enjoy a Pedego electric bike in cold and snowy weather

IRVINE, Calif. — Jan. 14, 2015 — Electric bikes aren’t just for sunny summer days.  Winter too can sparkle with the fun of electric bikes.  With their powerful motors, Pedego electric bikes have proven that they can glide through almost every winter wonderland as riders escape stuffy homes and offices.

“A lot of riders tell us they’ve discovered a new magical side to their Pedego bikes — enjoying incredible winter scenery and winter activities that are off the beaten path,” said Pedego CEO Don DiCostanzo.

To help even more people discover the fun and benefits of winter riding, here are Pedego’s tips for cycling through cold and snow.

Outfitting the perfect winter ride begins with your bike:

Use studded tires for heavy snow or icy conditions.  The Pedego Trail Tracker, equipped with 45NRTH Dillinger 4 studded tires, provides the traction and power you need to securely ride through snow. The bike’s floatation, traction, and comfort afforded by its large-volume, low-pressure tires will get you over and through otherwise unrideable terrain, including sand, mud, wet rocks, roots, ice and many kinds of snow.  These tires also work well on regular pavement. For Pedego Comfort Cruisers and Interceptors, the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro studded tires will help with traction. Pedego dealers can help you choose the right tires and bikes for your winter fun.

Use fenders to keep snow spray away.  Try Portland Design Works Mud Shovel fenders.

While Pedego batteries are safe in wet weather, it’s a good idea to wipe down both your bike and the battery when you arrive at your destination to keep it free of dirt and debris.

Outfitting you is the next step for the perfect winter ride:

Dress appropriately for the weather. Layering your clothes allows you to stay warm as you start out and remove layers as you warm up. Wear a base layer that wicks moisture away from your skin. For the middle layer, fleece or wool will provide warmth without bulk. A water-resistant outer layer will help you stay warm and dry.

Winter boots, wool socks, gloves, and goggles are small items that will mean a lot while you ride. They’re well worth the minor investment for the additional protection and comfort they provide. Remember sunscreen for your face, as snow can reflect sunlight as much as a lake in summer.

Your helmet will help keep you safe while you ride in challenging environments. Helmet covers such as those sold by RockiNoggins can keep your head and ears warm with style.
